“Short,” Mom said about the letter.

“That’s our Danny.” But Dad looked disappointed. He held up the piece of notepaper with two fingers. “Nothing about the war.”

“How does he use up the paper? Not by writing to us.” Mom took the page from Dad, folded it, and put it back into the envelope.

“I don’t know how the new music he likes could be any noisier than what they used to play. I’m surprised he can hear at all,” Dad said.

“He didn’t say it was louder. Just . . .” Mom fidgeted.

Dad waited.

“Wilder, maybe. Maybe political.”

Dad got kind of a smirk. “Protest music?”

“Could be.”

“Eve?” Dad smiled. “Danny is a soldier.”
